Prosthetic teeth made of materials like metal and acrylic that fit over the gums and/or remaining teeth to provide the impression that the patient still has a full set of teeth are called removable dentures, also referred to as fake teeth. Patients who are missing most of their teeth can chew food and speak normally again with the use of dentures. They might not bite as well as the patient's natural teeth, though. If all or most of the patient's natural teeth have been lost, or if the patient determines that having dentures would be a preferable option due to the state of their remaining teeth, dentures become necessary. Any teeth in the jaw that remain must be extracted before getting complete dentures. To ensure the patient doesn't have to go without teeth, the dentures are typically fitted the same day. A few months later, the dentures might need to be corrected or redesigned since the gums may change in shape if multiple teeth are extracted at once.
